Sweet Street Desserts has been baking the world’s finest desserts since 1979. When you order a dessert from us, you can be sure it’s been made from the only the finest available baking ingredients, such as chocolates from Africa and South America, pure Madagascar vanilla, and natural local farm-fresh ingredients. They are GMO-free, contain no artificial trans fats, and most products are also Kosher Dairy (KD).
Where do we get the inspiration for our fabulous desserts? Credit it all to the skill and artistry of founder and CEO Sandy Solmon, whose team in Reading, PA uses both traditional and unexpected ingredients to captivate customers around the world. Sweet Street has even earned 15 patents in design!
Of course, some desserts come with legacies of their own. It’s not unusual to find cakes, pies, cheesecakes and dessert bars named for the person who first developed the recipe or for particular regions of the country. Here are several Sweet Street Desserts creations that pay homage to people and places:
Kentucky Pie – According to Wikipedia, the original version of this traditional favorite, called “Derby Pie®,” was created in the Melrose Inn of Prospect, Kentucky in 1950 by the restaurant’s owners, Walter and Leaudra Kern, and their son, George. It was their specialty pastry, made from chocolate chips, pecans, Kentucky bourbon and butter, and is often associated with the Kentucky Derby. While the original recipe is still a secret, we married our Georgia Pecan pie with a chocolate chip cookie and came up with a winner that’s delicious all year long!
Mr. German’s Chocolate Cake – The well-known German Chocolate Cake, which is loaded with sweet baking chocolate, coconut and pecans, did not come to America with German immigrants. Sam German is the genius who developed a mild dark baking chocolate for Baker’s Chocolate Company in 1852 which they named in his honor – Baker’s German’s Sweet Chocolate. The cake recipe came from a Texas homemaker, Mrs. George Calay, in 1957. Our version has two thick chocolate layers with a delicious coconut-pecan filling and milk chocolate icing. Then we drench it in milk chocolate ganache and add more toasted pecans.
New York Cheesecake – This is New York’s most famous dessert. Its connection to the state can be attributed to a New York dairy farmer, William Lawrence, who discovered the process for making cream cheese in 1872. It was subsequently distributed by New York’s Empire Cheese Company and, in 1928, pasteurized and trademarked by James Kraft as Kraft Philadelphia Cream Cheese. We use it today to make our dense, smooth, creamy cheesecake. It has the perfect balance of tart and sweet, with a buttery graham cracker crust that doesn’t detract from the filling. Simplicity at its finest!
Sandy’s Sour Cream Coffee Cake – Of course, there has to be a gourmet dessert named in honor of Sweet Street founder, Sandy Solmon. Buttery and full of sour cream, her bundt cake recipe is laced with ribbons of cinnamon, brown sugar and nuts, and then glazed with apricots. The aroma alone will set off your taste buds! This coffee cake is the perfect scrumptious treat to serve with breakfast (or any other time of the day).
