Here are a few of the most popular choices:
- Key Lime Pie – Our heavenly Key Lime Pie is the real thing. It’s a little bit tart, like Key lime pie should be, and has a natural, light yellow filling. It’s made with the best-quality eggs, sugar, butter and sweetened condensed milk, poured into a Graham cracker/ granola crust, and topped it with whipped cream. Perfection!
- Lemonade Cake W/ Meyer Lemon – We love Meyer lemons, thought to be a cross between a lemon and a mandarin orange, because they’re sweeter and mellower than regular lemons. We layer our cake with light and fluffy lemon mousseline and Meyer lemon curd to create a taste sensation suitable for any special celebration.
- Rockslide Brownies – If you are passionate about brownies, you’re going to love these! They are light-textured and moist. We top the brownie with delicious caramel and pile on some cubes of brownie and toasted pecans. To finish them off in style, we drizzle milk chocolate ganache over them.
A Quick History of Dessert
It seems people have always liked eating sweet food, but we owe the invention of desserts like those we enjoy today primarily to sugarcane and sugar processing.
Humans have been eating honey since prehistoric times. Desserts, according to Wikipedia, were first made with locally available natural ingredients. In ancient civilizations, for example, people ate dried fruits, honeycomb and honey-coated candied nuts. Sometimes they added them to pastry, creating the first “pies” for Egyptian pharaohs.
During the 7th century in Africa, sugarcane was traded for the first time and introduced to Europeans. By the early 1500s, sugar was being refined in the New World and used in many confections and other things (like rum), but didn’t become widely available until the 18th century. It was very expensive and mostly enjoyed by the wealthy.
In 1519, the Spanish also discovered chocolate in the New World and transported it to Europe, where the first eating chocolate was eventually born. And the Industrial Revolution in the mid-18th century made popular desserts available to the general public because they could now be mass-produced, processed, preserved, canned, and packaged.
We lovers of dessert owe a debt of gratitude to the explorers who came before us and introduced us to the joys of cakes, pies, cheesecake and brownies!
