While researching the information for this piece, some things shocked us while others seemed quite blasé. In truth, there was such a plethora of information we filled up 16 pages of notes! Top 20 Cheesecake Trivia Facts
- Italian cheesecakes are considered “special,” because they are made with ricotta cheese.
- German cheesecakes use quark cheese (also known as Sauermil Chkӓse). This cheese has been made for centuries in Germany and is very high in protein, but low in fat (less than 10%).
- French cheesecakes are made with Neufchâtel cheese.
- Some people spread a sweetened sour cream on the tops of their cheesecakes to fill in the cracks. However, vanilla yogurt works just as well.
- Cream cheese, the staple ingredient in American cheesecake, was created in 1872 by a New Yorker named, William Lawrence. Apparently, it was an accident!
- The cheesecake-eating World Record is held by Sonya Thomas who stuffed herself with 11 pounds 9 ounces in 9 minutes!
- In 2009, Philadelphia Kraft Cheese set a Guinness Book World Record for the largest cheesecake ever created. It weighed 4,703 pounds!
- The Golden Girl cast reportedly consumed more than 100 cheesecakes in their seven years on TV.
- There is a scene on Friends that depicts Jennifer Anniston and Matthew Perry eating a cheesecake off the floor! That’s dedication. (It must have been our Triple Chocolate Cheesecake!).
- Stockholm’s well known all-garlic restaurant, Garlic & Shots, serves a garlic cheesecake. Thankfully, we don’t.
- There are over 100 cheesecake styles: New York, Pennsylvania-Dutch, Philadelphia style, Farmer’s Cheese, Country, Lactose-free, Chicagoan, Asian, Australian, German, Italian, Dutch, Greek, Brazilian, Colombian and Gooey butter cake…but there is no Japanese style.
- The American cheesecake did not grace anyone’s palate until the late 1800s.
- The Austrian Postal service used to sell cheesecake flavored stamps! Believe it or not, Hӓagen-Dazs made other, zero calorie, stamp flavors.
- Saks Fifth Avenue sold the world’s most expensive cheesecake. The Festive Two Stack set you back $300 per cake. It was made of mocha flavored cheeses and placed in a chocolate, filigreed, shell.
- Vanilla schnapps and cranberry juice create what is known as a cheesecake shot.
- Amazon will ship you some cheesecake Kit Kats, if you are interested. They are from Japan and cost nearly $19 for 12 bars.
- Guy Fieri has a “cheesecake challenge,” which includes a quarter-sized slice of chocolate swirl cheesecake garnished with chocolate syrup, pretzels and potato chips.
- There are some cheesecakes that include blue cheese.
- Paula Deen makes deep-fried cheesecake.
