Maine Blueberries
Maine blueberries are especially attractive because they are native to the area and are grown naturally. There are 44,000 acres of land set aside in Maine that are devoted to wild blueberries.
The blueberries in Maine have adapted to the low fertility soils in the area. They don’t require much maintenance, so they can remain relatively untouched until they’re ready to be harvested. Maine blueberries have also grown resistant to some of the most common pests. The blueberries there use a two-year cycle, which means that only half of the land is used to actually grow blueberries each season. The other half of the land is prepared to allow native vegetation to grow.
The Native Americans were the first to take advantage of the natural blueberry growth in this area. They ate them fresh and dried them. They also used them for healing rituals as well. They were not harvested commercially until the mid-1800s, but overplanting has never been a serious issue in Maine. They take great care to maintain healthy soil.
