Who Invented Cheesecake?
Food historians tell us that the first “cheese cake” may have come from Greece in about 2,000 BC. They considered it to be a good source of energy, and there’s some evidence that they served it to the first Greek Olympic athletes in 776 BC.
The recipe was far simpler however, than the cheesecakes we create today: pound and smooth out the homemade cheese, mix it with honey and wheat flour, press it into a brass pan, heat it, and cool before eating.
When the Romans conquered Greece, they made a few changes, adding eggs and sometimes a pastry crust. As the Roman Empire expanded, Europeans added their own spins on the cheesecake using native ingredients.
Cheesecake, as Americans know it, had to wait until 1872, however, when cream cheese was accidentally invented by William Lawrence in New York while he was trying to replicate a French cheese known as Neufchatel. He began to market his Philadelphia Brand Cream Cheese in foil wrappers starting in 1880. The company was later purchased by the Kraft Cheese Company in 1928. And so it goes…
